Obsessing Over Lifetime’s UnREAL and the Books that Expose Reality TV

in Non-Fiction by

I’m always on the hunt for a new TV obsession, and this summer I found it in Lifetime’s UnREAL. I’d been hearing buzz about the show for months, and when I saw that season 2 premiered on June 6, I knew it was time to take the plunge. Luckily, the whole first season is available on Hulu, so I set myself up with some snacks and settled in for a weekend-long marathon. Holy. Crap. This show is soooo good. It’s dark and funny and tragic and everything I wanted it to be. It stars Shiri Appleby as Rachel, an emotionally unstable producer on the set of a reality show (ala The Bachelor) who seems to both enjoy and be tortured…

Food TV: Cooking Competition Shows We Crave

in Potpourri by

With the success of shows like Project Runway and America’s Next Top Model, competition television has become a staple in our modern viewing experience. The dark new satire strips popular reality dating shows (read: The Bachelor and The Bachelorette) down to the bone, giving us the behind-the-scenes look we’ve been dying for thanks to its show-within-a-show premise. If you aren’t dialed into UnReal yet, here’s a quick breakdown: UnReal takes places on the set of the “hit dating show,” Everlasting, and follows the trials and tribulations of the producers, show runners, the bachelor and the contestants as they navigate filming the show all while dealing with their private lives.   UnReal is helmed by former Bachelor producer Sarah Shapiro and the…

American Idol ends: What are your fondest memories?

in Potpourri by

When I chatted with Kelly Clarkson shortly after her historical American Idol victory, I was struck by a distinct note of awe in her voice. She just couldn’t believe it had happened to her. In fact, she could scarcely believe she was in the process of being interviewed. A down-to-earth, naturally charming person had been thrust into the limelight and even after she’d had some time to become accustomed, she was still starry-eyed. Compared to other celebrity interviews I’d conducted, she was a breath of fresh air. And this got me to thinking: How many lives would this show change? Furthermore, how far will the show go, and how will it be remembered? Perhaps we can now address the latter question, as…
