Abs as Flat as a Book – Hottest Men of 2015!

in Potpourri by

Last year we treated our readers (and let’s be honest, ourselves) to a little present—the killer abs of the 10 hottest men of 2014. We’ve been pretty guilty of turning up the temperature a bit lately with “Olicity” Watch, Battle ‘Ships (can we blame Rachel Carter for global warming?) and of course, Heat Index. So why stop there? To help keep the roads free of ice over the holidays, we present our second annual Abs as Flat as a Book: the hottest men of 2015. Consider it a present AND a public service. Happy Holidays – You’re welcome! Adam Driver Intergalactic bad boy Adam Driver wowed us in Star Wars VIII. Not only is he easy on the eyes, but…

5 Lines We Loved From Clueless on its 20th Anniversary

in Potpourri by

I was 10 years old the first time I watched what has become a cult classic—Clueless—which made stars of Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd. July 19 marks the 20th anniversary of this film based on Jane Austen’s novel, Emma. The first time I watched this saccharine-sweet high school flick, I was instantly obsessed. It seemed like styles from the movie instantly began to infiltrate popular culture: I and every girl I knew had a fuzzy feather pen at school, plaid raged in its 90s glory transformed into schoolgirl skirts and crystal chokers adorned trendy girls’ necks. All of that fabulous lingo we’ve come to know and love spouted by the likes of Cher, Amber, Tai and Dionne was overheard in…

The Nexus of Nerdom: From Paul Rudd to Zoe Saldana

in Fiction by

During a recent conversation at BookTrib, we started to notice that there is some serious overlap when it comes to nerdy movie franchises. “Benedict Cumberbatch is in Star Trek, Sherlock Holmes AND The Hobbit,” someone said. “Well, John Barrowman is in Arrow and Doctor Who,” said another person. “Speaking of Doctor Who, Arthur Darvill used to be a companion, but now he’s going to play Rip Hunter on the new CW show Legends of Tomorrow, which is in the same universe as Arrow.” This went on for a while, until we realized something key: all roads lead back to Zoe Saldana. Yes, Zoe Saldana is the Kevin Bacon of the sci-fi world. Just take the new Marvel movie, Ant Man,…

Ant-Man: Do You Know the Huge Origins of this Tiny Hero?

in Fiction by

OK everybody—let’s get small. If you recognize that as an obscure reference to a Steve Martin comedy album recorded nearly 40 years ago—POINTS! But that’s not what I’m talking about here. I’m talking about Friday’s release of Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man, the comic-book behemoth’s latest offering and the 12th entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Does Ant-Man arrive with the goofiest concept of any comic-book movie we’ve ever seen? Possibly. An ex-con is recruited to fight bad guys by stealing a suit that gives its wearer the power to shrink down to insect size and communicate with ants. Yeah, that’s pretty weird. But it’s only the latest in a long, long line of literary and cinematic tales with teeny-tiny protagonists. In…
