Why I Gave My Fitbit Away: A Cautionary Tale

Look, it’s no secret that I’m prone to bouts of unbelievable idiocy. There was the time I decided rock climbing was, “totally the exercise I’ve always been looking for” and wound up on display, stricken with vertigo half-way up a rock wall in a crowded shopping mall. Boston Marathon just keeps inspiring

Twenty-six miles in under three hours? Oh, my aching feet! Before folks like me even get started in the Boston Marathon (at my 15-minute per mile pace it would take me—gulp!—6.5 hours) the winners were already smiling for the cameras and chugging sports drinks. Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia zipped in at 2:09:17 and the first woman to cross the finish line, Caroline Rotich of Kenya, sped in at 2:24:55. Before you shake your head at the 15-minute time difference, consider this: the race’s very first woman, Kathrine Switzer, who was physically attacked by the race co-director for illegally entering (women were barred due to being too frail) finished in 4:20. No matter what your resolutions for 2015, books can help. The right book can amuse, teach, reassure, or even heal. The term “bibliotherapy,” from the Greek biblion (books) and therapeia (healing), was coined in 1916 by Unitarian minister Samuel McChord Crothers. Books were therapeutic tools in military hospitals during the two world wars, and clinical bibliotherapy is still popular in treating mental illness, often in combination with medical approaches. Libraries also support “creative bibliotherapy,” mining fiction and poetry for their healing capabilities. The School of Life, philosopher Alain de Botton’s brainchild, is a London hub for studying how to live.
