In my head, my finished books are already films. The faces of my characters, drawn out in detail over months of writing and editing, are etched into my mind’s eye. When I re-read my novels, these imaginary people perform for me. I can hear the unique rhythms of their speeches, see their facial ticks. Reviewing a key scene is a screening. Yet none of my imagined scenes ever had a chance of making it into a book trailer.
