November’s Author Crush: There is No Author Quite like Lisa Kleypas

in Romance by

The other day, I got a text from a friend that read: “I need a good new romance author to read. Who do you recommend? They have to be Lisa Kleypas-like.” I wracked my brain for hours until I finally had to admit the truth: there is no one else quite like Lisa Kleypas. With her perfect blend of humor, romance and heartfelt emotion, Kleypas is an entity in and of herself. If I could make a shrine to her writing without seeming like a total lunatic, I would. I first fell for her historical romances with the Wallflower series, and then I was swept away by her modern Travis family saga. Now I’m a true devotee, willing to shell out…

Jonesin’ For a Fix: Books for TV Addicts — Jane the Virgin Edition

in Fiction by

When I first heard the premise to The CW’s Jane the Virgin, I rolled my eyes and mentally wrote it off. A virgin gets accidentally knocked up? Count me out. I’m a romance novel (and TV) junkie, and I’ve read/watched enough ‘surprise pregnancy’ tropes to know that it’s not my cup of tea. But then I saw the cute trailer… And I decided to at least give the show a try. Two seasons later, I am 100 percent, officially hooked. Yes, there is an accidental pregnancy. But Jane the Virgin is also hilarious, quick, romantic-as-hell and just plain awesome. It’s like nothing I’ve ever watched before, blending traditional romance with over-the-top telenovela-style drama. But the show is highly aware of the campiness,…

Jonesin’ For a Fix: Books for TV Addicts — Poldark Edition

in Fiction by

I have a problem. I’m obsessed with sexy historical shows and I just can’t quit. It started with Outlander, ramped up through Vikings, and crested along with Black Sails. It shows no signs of stopping, and honestly? I kind of don’t want it to. Especially when I get to watch shows as sexy and romantic as BBC One’s Poldark. If you’ve ever had an obsession with history, great makeout sessions and class differences overcome by love, then Poldark is the show for you. Based on a series of novels first published by Winston Graham in 1945, the show follows Ross Poldark, a British officer during the American Revolution, who returns home to find his father dead and his fiancée about…

3 Shows, and a Book, that Depict the Sexy Side of History

in Fiction by

I like my historical shows like I like my men: sexy, a little scandalous and shirtless as often as possible. Luckily, television has not disappointed me lately with the historical sexiness. Everywhere you look these days men and women are heating up the small screens in their corsets and pantaloons — or lack thereof. I’m not even picky about the time period, to be honest. As long as a show is filled with a healthy dose of historical romance, I’m hooked. So in appreciation of all of those (often literal) rolls in the hay, here are three sexy historical shows, and one book, that you desperately need to binge on. Reign If you’re looking for historical accuracy, stay far away from…
