The Parrot's Perch - A Memoir

by Karen Keilt

GENRE: Memoir Journey
PUBLICATION DATE: 04/19/2019
DESCRIPTION:

THE PARROT’S PERCH IS BRAZIL’S “DIRTY LITTLE SECRET”. ATTENTION TO THE GLOBAL ISSUE OF TORTURE HAS LONG BEEN OVERSHADOWED BY THE GLITZ AND GLAMOUR OF A CARNIVAL-MASKED, BIKINI-CLAD, SAMBA-SOOTHED LIE.

IN PORTUGUESE IT SOUNDS LOVELY – PAU DE ARARA - BUT A PARROT’S PERCH IS AN ACTUAL TORTURE DEVICE USED FOR “INTERROGATION” IN BRAZILIAN JAILS. INNOCENCE OR GUILT IS IRRELEVANT; THE TORTURERS USE THIS DEVICE TO FIND LEGITIMACY FOR THEIR SADISTIC PLEASURES. THE VICTIM IS SHACKLED TO A CROSSBAR, HUNG UPSIDE DOWN, AND TORTURED IN DIABOLICALLY CREATIVE AND SADISTIC WAYS.

THIS STORY IS A FACT-BASED INTERNATIONAL THRILLER. TWO WEALTHY, AMERICAN FAMILIES GET CAUGHT UP AND DESTROYED IN A COMPLEX WEB OF DECEPTION, POLICE CORRUPTION, AND DRUGS.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Born and raised in São Paulo, Brasil in 1953, Karen Keilt discovered her father had been a US Military Intelligence Officer during the country's brutal dictatorship after giving her testimony at The Brazilian National Truth Commission at the UN in NYC in 2013.
After suffering through 45 days of false imprisonment, rape, and torture Karen fled Brasil seeking a new life and redemption in the United States. She had an eclectic career including English/Portuguese teacher at Berlitz, Riding Master for the YMCA, Executive Director of the Lake Wylie, SC Chamber of Commerce, General Manager of the Florida Hammerheads of RHI, Director of Fundraising for Fantastic Sams, Director of Resales at MailBoxes, Etc, and VP of Franchise Sales for Frannet New England. Fearing for the safety of her family and self Karen never spoke of the horrific imprisonment until she was asked to testify at the UN in 2013 and later wrote her memoir in 2019.
