Plowman: Harvest of Grain and Innocence

by Charles Bruckerhoff

GENRE: Historical Fiction
PUBLICATION DATE: 10/20/2023
DESCRIPTION:

Stella Young and Hana Sanada enrolled in Stanton Academy for Humanity. Learning was hard, built character, imparted truth, justice, and morality. Students called it Sustainable Farming on Steroids. One day the girls discovered wartime journals of two great-grandfathers, from WWII, and of Stella’s grandfather, from Vietnam. The girls began turning the journals into a book. Their plans for themes changed abruptly. Stella's father was an infantry captain in Afghanistan. One day notification officers arrived at her home to inform Olivia, her mom, and Stella, that their beloved husband and dad had been killed. The horrific news crushed their whole family. The girls researched "wrong wars" the American government had committed her heroic soldiers to, since Vietnam. Then, they watched news of America’s pullout from Afghanistan. Stella and Hana sized up what had gone so wrong with American government, its military, and society. They must restore law, order, morality, and integrity to the USA.

REVIEWS:

“An unflinching exploration of controversial wartime legacies, cherished childhood friendship and the resilience of a close-knit community.” - Reviewer Lauren Hayataka

“Bruckerhoff’s masterful prose is heavy with emotion and does an excellent job showing, rather than telling readers, the message of his book. By watching this family be torn apart by their loss and the two main characters be forced to grow up before their time in such a regrettable manner has left me thinking long after I finished the book. I also appreciated the accessibility of the book. The structure and writing style are efficient in delivering the author’s points while remaining concise and simple enough for readers of any age and background to comprehend. While treatises on the effects of war are often dense and esoteric, Plowman is anything but. As I’ve mentioned, this book has left an impression on me and I’m confident it will do the same for any reader fortunate enough to pick it up.” - Reviewer Wyatt Semenuk
