Dear Readers,

Halloween is tonight!

The neighborhood kids will soon be arriving at the door in costumes they can’t wait to show off.

Whatever draws you to Halloween — the costumes, the candy, the spectacle or the thrills — there’s a book to keep the fun going long after the last trick-or-treater heads home.

For the costume lovers:

She’s a Doll by Barbara Truelove

Some people dress as dolls for Halloween. Lucy McQuinn becomes one — after she’s murdered. Trapped in a porcelain doll, she recruits a human ally to help punish her killer. Lacy sleeves, murderous intentions and a very unconventional second act make this dark comedy a wicked addition to your reading pile.

For those who always want one more treat:

The Killing Time by Elly Griffiths

If “just one more chapter” is your reading equivalent of “just one more piece,” meet Detective Ali Dawson. A suspicious death linked to a psychic medium sends her pursuing danger across centuries, in a mystery packed with Victorian atmosphere, time-travel complications and hints of the supernatural. Go ahead. Have another chapter.

For fans of the spectacle:

Eternal Glow by Heather Gay

Forget the elaborate Halloween makeup. Celeste’s new look is truly frightening. Desperate to maintain her standing among affluent Mormon mothers, she accepts a secret beauty treatment that promises radiance — and delivers gruesome side effects. This body-horror thriller takes the pursuit of the perfect glow to horrifying extremes.

For those who come for the scares:

Off the Reservation by Stephen Graham Jones

Nathan Yellow Tail joins three older Blackfeet activists to bring a boy’s remains home from the Carlisle Indian Industrial School. But something terrible travels with the bones. A mission of return and remembrance becomes a story steeped in supernatural dread — the kind that might have you switching on another light.

Happy Halloween — and happy reading!
