Dear Reader,

Fall is one of my favorite seasons; it might be my absolute fave. Sweater weather, boots, leather jackets. Everything is full of potential again and, yes, another chance.

This fall’s lineup of new releases is going to keep me busy until the holidays, I think. There’s been lots of buzz around several books coming out between now and then, and these in particular snagged my attention (and a spot on my TBR list).

Partita by Barbara Kingsolver
Literary Fiction

Barbara Kingsolver returns with the story of a former piano prodigy whose settled life is disrupted by a call from the man she loved decades ago. The encounter pulls her back toward youthful ambition, old wounds and roads not taken. Coming on the heels of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Demon Copperhead (which I loved, by the way), Kingsolver’s latest is certain to draw attention from readers who love complex characters and her gorgeous prose.

An Unexpected Life: A Memoir by Gloria Steinem
Memoir/Biography

Gloria Steinem traces the path from her book-filled childhood to her emergence as one of the most influential voices in modern feminism. I followed Steinem as she spoke for women and spoke for me. In her new book, she recalls her time in India, her early career and the writers and thinkers who helped shape her worldview. Steinem has written extensively about politics and social change; this time, we’ll get the fuller story of the life behind that work.

Before You Were Anne by Emiko Jean
Mysteries & Thrillers

Emiko Jean brings back Detective Chelsey Calhoun from The Return of Ellie Black for a case involving a murdered Japanese immigrant and her missing 16-year-old daughter. The investigation takes a darker turn when Chelsey learns the victim had been living under a false identity, with ties that may reach into her own past. Readers who embraced Jean’s first Chelsey Calhoun mystery won’t have long to wait for her return on September 1.

Broken Rival by Tessa Bailey
Romance

A BookTrib favorite, Tessa Bailey leaves contemporary romance behind for a dystopian story involving outlawed time travel. Stranded in a world where she doesn’t belong, the heroine is caught between two brothers: one is her former high school sweetheart; the other wants her dead. For longtime Bailey readers, the appeal is partly the surprise of seeing one of romance’s biggest names take such a sharp turn. Can she pull it off? Can’t wait to find out!

Victorious by V.E. Schwab
Fantasy

Eight years after Vengeful, V.E. Schwab returns to Victor Vale, Eli Ever and the ExtraOrdinaries for the final book in her Villains series. This is one of those books I wasn’t sure we’d ever get to see. Former best friends turned enemies are headed toward one last confrontation, with old alliances and rivalries coming back into play. The long gap between books alone would make Victorious notable; for Schwab fans like me, it’s the ending we’ve been waiting for.
