If you know BookTrib, you know we live and breathe books. Our team prides ourselves on giving great book recs, supporting indie bookstores, and championing authors. But even the biggest book lovers have to be haters sometimes…

We asked the BookTrib team for their hottest book takes, from marketing moves to trope trickery. With the assurance of anonymity, everyone took a moment to vent. Scroll for some shocking bookish burns and find out if there are any that make you feel seen — or any that may ruffle some feathers.

Some additional confessions (if you still can’t get enough of the hate):

I hate the term ‘mood readers.’ I don’t know anyone who isn’t a mood reader, unless they’re following a set syllabus for a course! There’s too much bookish terminology; let’s spend that time actually reading instead.”

“Traditionally published books that still manage to be way too long and full of typos. Why should I pay almost $30 for a hardcover if no one’s bothered to take a look at it once the author sent in the draft? Do publishing houses just not use editors anymore?”

“I’m so sick of reading books where the author tried so hard to create a unique, memorable female lead. You can smell the fabrication and the game from a mile away. Why do women have to be super-human to be characterized?”

“Memoirs that mistake TMI for truth, rawness for depth and “me” for meaning. I’m looking at you, American Canto.
