The Fox and the Devil by Kiersten White

"If you love a book with gothic fantasy and horror, supernatural beings, found family, sapphic romance and an absolutely killer cast, then "The Fox and the Devil" is for you!"

Breathtaking. Mesmerizing. Utterly to die for.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White is back with a heart-pounding gothic fantasy laced with slow-burn sapphic romance, found family and – of course – a dark, supernatural twist – The Fox and the Devil.

Anneke Van Helsing – daughter of the infamous Abraham – is a brilliant detective who finds herself on the hunt for her father’s killer. Abraham Van Helsing was murdered by a stunningly beautiful woman who fled into the night without a trace, and Anneke is haunted by that striking specter, seeing her each night in her dreams and yet unable to convince the police of the woman’s existence. As more bodies begin to surface across Europe, it becomes clear that Abraham’s death was just the beginning. There is a supernatural serial killer on the loose, and it all points back to Diavola, the ethereal woman who is, in fact, very, dangerously, real.

A Hunt Through Shadowed Paris

As Anneke chases Diavola from one murder to the next, she realizes her need to find her father’s murderer has become an obsession – one that toes the dangerous line of love toward the woman she claims to hate. As letters from her devil only add to the simmering tension between the two women, it quickly becomes clear that there is far more at play than just the mysterious, sensual Diavola. After all, there is always more than one being that stalks in the night…

Armed with the latest forensic advances, a team of endearing detectives and brilliant minds determined to catch the killer, and an eye that catches every detail, no matter how small, Anneke must race against the clock to catch the murderer before it’s too late. Will she succeed? Or will she meet her own demise at the hands of the beautiful devil whose letters have become a lifeline?

From the very first page, The Fox and the Devil lures you in with rich details and a lush world before sinking its teeth in with an absolutely riveting plot that will have you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Set against the backdrop of turn-of-the-century Paris, White has crafted a masterpiece of a mystery, each revelation spiraling into further suspense. The structure of the book itself – each chapter is marked with a location, month, day and year – builds the suspense as well, as characters jump back and forth in time, leaving you desperate to find out what led to those fateful final moments.

White has truly outdone herself with the characters in The Fox and the Devil, from Anneke to Diavola, Dávid to Maher and Inge. In just a few short chapters, I was completely hooked and head over heels attached to them. Not knowing who would make it to the end – let alone the next chapter – kept the pacing sharp and efficient, and it also had me dying to know what came next. I flew through this book in the best way, and I already can’t wait to read it again to enjoy the relationships, humanity and emotion packed into these characters and pages.

If you love a book with gothic fantasy and horror, supernatural beings, found family, sapphic romance and an absolutely killer cast, then The Fox and the Devil is for you!
