BookTrib is proud to introduce the latest Shop Bookish partner, The Unemployed Philosophers Guild. We love their quirky literary-themed items, so in their honor, we’ve asked the fractious younger sister of Bridgerton’s Lady Whistledown, the ever-entertaining Lady Hollaback, to recommend some of her personal favorites. Not surprisingly, it’s all Jane Austen-related. Enjoy!

Dearest Gentle Reader,

It has been a vexing month, has it not, as we await word of the engagement of Mr. Colin Bridgerton to Miss Penelope Featherington? What is one to do to pass the time and fight the forces of ennui?

I have turned to my dear friend, the author Jane Austen, for advice. As you know, she resides in England like my esteemed sister Lady Whistledown, while I must abide here in the former colonies, far from the best gossip and proper afternoon tea. Darling Jane has given me the name of her favorite proprietor, the whimsically named Unemployed Philosophers Guild, and they have just the thing to lift the spirits.

For those who are participating in the latest season of the ton and seeking the attention of an eligible mate, may I recommend Jane Austen’s Pride & Peppermints? I have it on the very best authority that these sweets will keep your breath as fresh and cool as a winter breeze. And if the icy freshness of one’s breath should entice a suitor to steal out for a moment on the veranda, it would be best to be prepared with Jane Austen’s Finest Balm in Pemberly Mint. Kissable lips could very well seal the deal—but do be sure you’re caught with just the right marriage prospect.

Of course, sweetness of breath is not enough if one doesn’t attend to one’s hygiene, which is why your ladies’ maid or valet might wish to lay in a supply of Suds & Sensibility, Miss Austen’s finely milled bath soap. You will never offend with the judicious application of this gentle cleanser.

Once at the ball, you may want to obtain a bag or two for your reticule. Miss Austen has a clever little pouch adorned with her own witticisms—perfect for stashing one’s dance card. But what is one to do if the dance card is seldom filled? This author believes that there is still much pleasure to be gained from good company and pleasant diversion, which is why one might find enjoyment in assembling the cunning Jane Austen Jigsaw Puzzle with friends. And wouldn’t a Jane Austen mug be the perfect receptacle to mask a healthy dash of spirits in one’s tea? Why shouldn’t wallflowers make merry if they are discrete?

Even Queen Charlotte would find herself with a brightened outlook as she counts the days until the ton’s return with these fine products. Now it remains to be seen if Miss Francesca Bridgerton will heed Her Majesty’s choice of Lord Samadani as her perfect match, and if the dashing Mr. Bridgerton will make an honest woman of Miss Featherington. This author has her sauciest drinking vessel and an adult libation at the ready.

Ever yours,

Lady Hollaback
