“The Hunger Games” as You’ve Never Seen It Before!
Since it’s original publication in 2010, The Hunger Games has continued to captivate and inspire millions of readers — and movie-goers. This fall, Scholastic has announced they will publish a new illustrated edition of the world-wide bestseller. The new version of the book — set to release in October — will feature more than 30 black-and-white illustrations by Nico Delort, which should give a whole new look at the continent of Panem and its inhabitants. In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, author Suzanne Collins said: “I’m thrilled with Nico Delort’s striking black-and-white scratchboard artwork for The Hunger Games and feel it will have [a] lasting influence on a new generation of Panem readers.” Get a sneak peek at some of the artist’s renditions.
Appeals Court Calls Texas READER Act Unconstitutional
In a major victory, one of the country’s most controversial book banning laws has been deemed a violation of First Amendment protections against compelled speech. The controversial Texas law (HB 900) would have required book vendors to review and rate books sold to Texas schools — both new books and books previously sold — for sexual content, completely and partially banning books from public schools based on these ratings. The court dismissed the state’s claims that the book ratings would merely be informational and uncontroversial, like nutrition labels, movie ratings, or warning labels on cigarette.
The plaintiffs, a coalition of Texas bookstores and other reading advocates, said in a joint statement: “With this historic decision the court has moved decisively to ensure the constitutionally protected speech of authors, booksellers, publishers, and readers, and prevent the state government from unlawfully compelling speech on the part of private citizens.” A happy day for readers indeed.
