Just Imagine by Sean Baker

What's It About?

"Just Imagine" takes the reader on an adventure to learn what your imagination is capable of and how you can use it to the best of your abilities.

What is your imagination capable of? The sky’s the limit in Sean Baker’s Just Imagine, a vibrant, fun-filled children’s book that teaches children about the power their own brain holds. Whether playing pretend, visualizing goals into reality, or braving scary thoughts, your imagination is one of the most powerful tools. And you need to learn how to use it, to set yourself up for the future you always dreamed of.

Teaching Confidence and Bravery

This book follows Pup, an adorable little dog who dives into the world of imagination while sitting at the breakfast table. Pup acts as both narrator and main character, leading readers through the story and lessons of Just Imagine. But first, what is imagination? Well, put simply, imagination is “the application of pure creation”.

Pup embarks on an adventure from a boat made of bread to a goat on Mt. Fuji, to a raccoon named Ruby drinking a strawberry smoothie while watching a movie (how’s that for a lot of great rhymes?) Young readers will see the best part of imagination as each element of the story appears out of thin air — it doesn’t have to be grounded in reality. You can dream up mythical creatures, places you’ve never been, and scenarios that you can control! There is so much fun to be had when you can invent a whole adventure inside your own brain.

But, Pup soon learns alongside the readers that there are scary parts of imagination. It feeds on what you feel. So, when you’re lying in the dark, shadows on the wall may look like a threatening monster. But this fear is only in your imagination, and you have control over it.

When the spark of fear grows into a flame, you can imagine a bucket of water to douse the flame and calm the fear. Beyond teaching problem-solving skills, it reminds kids there is safety in their imagination.

Finally, Pup takes readers through the power of visualization. This powerful tool lets you dream of the future and make it a reality. If you imagine yourself at the big game making a basket, you just might do it on the court! No, it is not a magical way of accomplishing something without any effort. Instead, it teaches children to build confidence by imagining themselves as someone who can accomplish anything.

Colorful Must-Read For All Ages

With a fun, fast-paced rhyme scheme, Just Imagine takes readers through the possibilities of imagination and reminds them to imagine with love and passion instead of fear. Sean Baker dedicates the book to his own children and their boundless imagination, curiosity and the adventures they share. Clearly, Baker knows his audience, and his story is sure to resonate with readers of all ages.

Illustrator Lori Domingos has depicted a wide variety of creatures, both real and imaginary, as lions, unicorns, frogs, crocodiles, bunnies, pigs, and one loveable puppy. Her watercolor art style is vibrant, her characters and scenery lively, and her imagination certainly knows no limits!

Just Imagine makes for a great read-aloud, with a musicality to the words and bold illustrations to put on full display. Kids will love watching Pup’s adventures through imagination and will learn a few valuable lessons along the way. Don’t just imagine what you could learn from this book — pick it up and see for yourself!
