Burner by Mark Greaney

The film adaptation of Mark Greaney’s first thriller, The Gray Man, premiered on Netflix earlier this year and quickly became the platform’s most-watched movie of 2022. Currently the fourth most-watched original film in Netflix history, the movie was an instant fan favorite, leading to film and TV execs jumping to green light more entries in the universe.

Thankfully, Greaney has given the filmmakers plenty of story material to pull from, and series protagonist Court Gentry returns this February in the twelfth Gray Man novel: Burner (Berkley).

Discovering a World of Corruption

When you kick over a rock, you never know what’s going to crawl out.

Alex Velesky is about to discover that the hard way. He’s stolen records from the Swiss bank that employs him, thinking that he’ll uncover a criminal conspiracy. But he soon finds that he’s tapped into the mother lode of corruption. Before he knows it, he’s being hunted by everyone from the Russian mafia to the CIA.

Court Gentry and his erstwhile lover, Zoya Zakharova, find themselves on opposites poles when it comes to Velesky. They both want him but for different reasons.

That’s a problem for tomorrow. Today they need to keep him and themselves alive. Right now, it’s not looking good.

Influenced by Clancy and Military Training

Writing under the wing of Tom Clancy during the legendary author’s final years, Greaney co-wrote Clancy’s final four novels, and after the author’s death, picked up the torch and penned another four entries in the Jack Ryan series. After Greaney learned from Clancy to write stories with a broader and more globe-spanning scope, the nine entries in the Gray Man series that he has written since now stand as a testament to Clancy’s influence.

Using his degree in international relations and political science, the extensive research he’s conducted in over 35 countries, and the training he’s done alongside military and law enforcement in the use of firearms, battlefield medicine, and close-range combative tactics; Burner is set to be another notch in Greaney’s belt of heart-pounding thrillers.
