Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Carrie Soto is fierce, and her determination to win at any cost has not made her popular. But by the time she retires from tennis, she is the best player the world has ever seen. But six years after her retirement, Carrie finds herself sitting in the stands of the 1994 US Open, watching her record be taken from her by a brutal, stunning player.

Attention Tennis Lovers! So much to love in Carrie Soto is Back! I love how the former tennis champion decides to come out of retirement to defend her title; I love her relationship with Javier Soto, her handsome and proud father and coach; I love the developing romance with a fellow tennis pro, and I enjoy translating the Spanish phrases that appeared throughout the story. As a former tennis player and longtime fan, this book was engaging, fast-paced and a perfect escape for me!

After six years off the court, Carrie Soto decides to get back to competing on order to prevent a younger, current tennis star from breaking her all-time high record of 20 Grand Slam wins. Recovering from injury and burdened by age, Carrie turns to her longtime trainer and father, Javier Soto to coach her back to being the competitor that she used to be.

Carrie’s ambition, dedication and sacrifice are reminiscent of many professional tennis players including Serena Williams and Billie Jean King, and her hitting partner reminded me a bit of John McEnroe. All the characters went on their own private journeys and transformed on the pages. It was hard not to get caught up in the training, the relationships and competitions – the author made it feel real and exciting!

Although this is my first Taylor Jenkins Reid book (haven’t had a chance to read the well-loved The Seven Husbands of Evelyn HugoDaisy Jones & the Six or Malibu Rising) I consider myself a fan and I highly recommend Carrie Soto is Back, especially for competitors and lovers of any racket sport!
