NEWS FROM THE BOOK WORLD
According to two new reports from the American Library Association and PEN America, book bans and challenges have spiked dramatically this year. Both organizations released new studies to coincide with Banned Books Week, which found that in the first eight months of 2022, there were 681 attempts to ban or restrict books in American libraries. Those attempts targeted a whopping 1,651 different books!
In our book-to-screen news, Deadline reported that Will Smith will produce and possibly star in a film adaptation of Marcus Sakey’s Brilliance. Then, we also heard that Nicholas Galitzine has joined the cast of The Idea of You, the upcoming Amazon Prime film based on the novel by Robinne Lee. Paul Greengrass is reportedly going to write, produce, and direct a film adaptation of Stephen King’s Fairy Tale! Last, but certainly not least, Asha Bromfield is adapting Hurricane Summer, which was published last year by Wednesday Books, as a film.
AWARDS AND ACCOLADES WORTHY OF NOTE
On Monday, September 19, S.A. Cosby, Kotaro Isaka, Nelson DeMille, Sandra Brown, and Morgan Entrekin took home the top awards in the Strand Critics Awards! The National Book Foundation also unveiled the longlist for the National Book Award this year.

MORE BOOKS THE MEDIA’S BUZZING ABOUT
The former FBI Director, James Comey, will make his fiction debut next spring with a crime novel, the first in a planned series, according to publisher Mysterious Press.
According to Hollywood Reporter, actor Zachary Quinto and author James Patterson are joining forces on a new Audible Originals series, The Method, which Amazon describes as a “chilling, immersive audio thriller” and “a rollercoaster ride of lies, coverups, and dark deeds.”
A slew of books about January 6’s attack on the U.S. Capitol will be published this fall. The Breach: The Untold Story of the Investigation Into January 6th, written by Denver Riggleman, is coming from Henry Holt on September 27th. Random House also announced the fall publication of The January 6th Report. There will undoubtedly be more books and announcements coming soon, so keep your eye out for those.
INTERESTING EXTRAS
The former first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, will visit Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles to discuss The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times, which is scheduled for publication on Nov. 15 by Crown.
