Unyielding Destiny by Spiros Gratsias

—∞—

“A fascinating novel in which a mobster’s story intersects with that of a district attorney’s, leading to questions about what it means to be a person of honor.” Clarion Reviews

“A swift, thoughtful thriller … as fast-paced as it is philosophical. … Great for fans of Leonardo Sciascia, Tod Goldberg’s Gangsterland. … Grittily realistic.” BookLife

“Gratsias has given us a glorious character in Morris, certainly flawed in many ways but a thinking, sensitive person who tries to live his life on an honorable course. … This is one of those books where you find yourself rooting for a hardened criminal.” BookTrib

Born in the desperation of a tenement in New York City’s Little Italy, Frank Morris is orphaned and adopted by the boss of a powerful crime family. Frank enters the family business, bringing strength, intelligence and unmatched loyalty to every task. He also is reflective, remembering every detail of the day Ray Easten, the consummate soldier and leader, took his own life in an effort to save Frank’s during the Korean War. What is my destiny, Frank ponders, that would keep me alive and take away a great man like Ray?

His loyalty to his adoptive family would land him in the hell called Alcatraz, where a chance meeting with Ray’s son, Scott, sets into motion a series of events that will come test both men’s values — Frank, the fiercely loyal and seasoned mafia hitman, and Scott, the fresh-faced, idealistic assistant DA whose mission is to crack down on New York’s organized crime. Torn between his duty to family and debt to Scott’s father, Frank’s altruistic and selfless true nature is revealed as he battles to escape the darkness of his unyielding destiny.

Time’s Up: A Cynical, Misanthropic Look at the End of Life on Earth by Mike Ross

—∞—

“A measured but engrossing tale about the end of the world. … The author deftly laces the narrative with a cynical edge.” Kirkus Reviews

“Grabs you from the beginning and keeps you engaged through the end. It’s a novel concept, one I’ve never seen prior and … I have a lot of experience with books dealing with the unexplained/unexplainable.” —Amazon reviewer

Did you enjoy the movie Don’t Look Up? If you did and you want more of this genre then Time’s Up may be just the ticket.

—∞—

So let’s say that you are the President of the United States and a group of possible aliens, who never actually show themselves, arrive over New York City in what might have been a spaceship. The supposed aliens tell of the fast-approaching end of all life on earth. They describe how it will happen in great detail but the whole story is pretty far-fetched. Nothing remotely like it has even been imagined in a sci-fi movie.

Along with the buzzkill prediction comes an offer to evacuate a small number of humans to a new planet. Though witnessed by thousands of people from all over the world and documented in hundreds of thousands of cell phone images, none of what seemed to have happened has been corroborated or detected by any government agency, sensor or official.

Oh, and one even more important issue: Mid-term elections are coming up and your Party cannot afford to lose a single seat. So now what do you do? Accept everything at face value? Declare it all a huge hoax? Label it a terrorist attack? Has one of our adversaries developed some unbelievably powerful new technologies? Do you take actions and, if so, which ones? How will the opposing Party spin your actions … or inaction? Or do you cover the whole thing up as fast and completely as possible? Why did this have to happen on my watch?
