This past weekend, the Horror Writers Association (HWA) announced its long list for the 2021 Bram Stoker Awards. The long list is the preliminary ballot for determining nominees in categories that include novels, first novels, graphic novels, young adult novels, long fiction, short fiction, fiction collections, screenplays, poetry, anthologies, non-fiction and short non-fiction.

The HWA is the premier writers’ organization in the horror and dark fiction genre, with more than 1,800 members. Its annual Bram Stoker Awards have been awarded since 1987 to English-language works of “superior achievement” in the horror genre. They are named in honor of Bram Stoker, author of the seminal horror work, Dracula.

This year’s long list includes everything from bestsellers to indie releases. Among them: The Final Girl Support Group (Berkley) by Grady HendrixMy Heart Is a Chainsaw (Gallery/Saga Press) by Stephen Graham Jones; The Book of Accidents (Del Rey) by Chuck Wendig (of Terribleminds fame); the short story collection Empty Graves: Tales of the Living Dead (WordFire Press LLC) by Jonathan Maberry (of V-Wars fame); YA author Kendare Blake‘s All These Bodies (Quill Tree Books); self-publishing sensation Chuck Tingle‘s recent novella, Straight; and the first Netflix episode of Squid Game by Hwang Dong-hyuk. The final ballot of nominees will be announced on or around February 23 and the winners will be awarded at StokerCon on Saturday, May 14.
