BOOKS:

8 Paradoxes of Leadership Agility: How to Lead and Inspire in the Real World (2020)

Your biggest literary influencers

John Maxwell, Marshall Goldsmith, Napoleon Hill, James Allen

Last book read:

Be Something Wonderful: When Suddenly You want to be More

The book that changed your life:

As a Man Thinketh — the power of thoughts on our actions and lives is profound. I love this book as it made me consciously choose the thoughts to put into my mind, to be resilient in the face of criticism, self-inflicted pain, unrealistic expectations and instead, choose to think, feel and act in a way that serves me, and helps me attain my ideal self. The book is incredibly short — but incredibly powerful.

Your favorite literary character:

My favorite is Captain America. Perhaps some may dispute that he’s not a literary character but he’s inspiring to me all the same. He says what’s tough and does what’s right, even when he’s faced with the greatest odds, he still keeps his chin up and pushes on. In many ways, I aspire to have the same level of resolve and resilience and keep moving forward in my personal life and in my business to succeed against all odds.

Currently working on:

Developing an online course which is based on my book, and extends into the discovery of an agile leader, followed by strategic actions to close the gap between reality and ideal with consistency and discipline.

Words to live by:

Live a life with no regrets and at your highest potential.

Advice for aspiring authors:

Spend ample time researching the pain points of your ideal clients (audience), test the structure with a group before launching into the writing at full steam. A well thought out structure and framework works much better than trying to rectify the design at the end. Factor in budget for professional editing — I can’t say enough the pain it took for me to read my unedited work — and the joy when I saw the polished and crystal-clear writing in the end.

Testimonials:

“After reading the excerpt I decided this was one book I wanted to read rather than just adding to my wishlist. Many books I end up buying but not reading, but the concise, easy to digest style appealed as did the opportunity to understand paradoxes faced by others. The book lived up to expectations. Section one nicely set the scene. Section 2 went over the 8 paradoxes in just the right amount of detail with a specific case study to make it come to life plus nicely presented and consistent subsections. The exercises are nicely packaged into section 3 with further detail for those who want it, meaning that I could swiftly make my way through the first two sections knowing I could go deeper if needed. Well worth the read.”

“Yeo Chuen Chuen thoughtfully engages readers by validating that while change may not always be easy … it is a constant. She’s honest in her pursuit to develop a coaching model (Re4), that leaders of varying experience and skill levels can put into practice. The author also embeds a number of real life stories as a way to help readers think through “what would you do and why?” I highly recommend this book for all leaders as it allows for self-reflection, yet also provides great actions that can be acted upon immediately.”

“Renowned leadership coach Yeo Chuen Chuen’s 8 Paradoxes of Leadership Agility: How to Lead and Inspire in the Real World is the perfect book for those getting into or struggling with leadership in today’s ever-changing business world and society in general, including the non-profit sector. Yeo promotes the Re4 Coaching Model, which helps leaders see their problems in new ways, and helps them learn to resolve these using a practical, individualized approach. Old forms are tossed out in favor of new ways to lead. Instead of relying on outdated leadership paradigms, each would-be leader, or struggling leader, should take a look at themselves, discover their own strengths and style and implement change this way. In clear-cut, real-life examples, Yeo shows how to navigate the waters between two paradoxes. The answers are there, and this book will help you find and understand them.

The author writes in a way that makes complex ideas easy to understand, regardless of what your leadership skills are or have been. It’s not about how you used to do things. It’s how you can do them from this point forward. Change isn’t always easy, but the author gives examples to show how possible and easy it is. Leadership has been a one-size-fits-all concept, but it shouldn’t be. Each leader, company and organization has unique needs. The questionnaires and worksheet questions help you think about what has been working for you, and what hasn’t, and how you can incorporate Re4 into your day-to-day leadership tasks. I recommend 8 Paradoxes of Leadership Agility to anyone searching for new ways to solve problems in today’s world, and to rethink the way they’ve been going about their business.”
