Frank L. Cole was born into a family of southern storytellers and wrote his first book at age eight. Highly superstitious and gullible to a fault, Frank will believe in any creepy story you tell him, especially ones involving ghosts and Big Foot. Currently, along with his wife and three children, he resides in the shadow of a majestic western mountain range, which is most likely haunted.

Your biggest literary influences:

J.K. Rowling, Neil Gaiman, Eoin Colfer

Last book read:

The Toll by Neal Shusterman

The book that changed your life:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I had heard about the Harry Potter craze and decided, for fun, to take a look at it. Before that book, I hadn’t read a children’s novel since Elementary school. Reading Harry Potter changed the way I write. Before that I was writing horror books. After it, I realized I wanted to write children’s fantasy and humor books. I have never looked back!

Your favorite literary character:

Ivan from The One and Only Ivan. I never thought someone could drop me into the mind of a gorilla. He was totally relatable, so sincere, and just a real character. And he was a gorilla. Katherine Applegate is a literary genius!

Currently working on:

A book that’s equal parts Dungeons & Dragons and Jumanji about a game store that transports a boy and his friends into a world of monsters and wizards and magical dice.

Words to live by:

If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time to write anything worth reading.

Advice for aspiring authors:

Kindness is key to true success. Be kind to readers and other authors, be kind teachers, writing coaches, and editors. Be kind to bookstore employees and book reviewers. Be kind to your family as they endure your writing quirks. And when you finally make it over a huge author hurdle – and there are so many to climb over – be kind to those still behind you. Maybe you’ll never be remembered for selling a book in your lifetime, but you will be remembered for how you treated others along the way.
