Her books have been called “smart and satisfying” (Kirkus Reviews), “extraordinarily memorable” (RT Book Reviews) and “highly entertaining” (Publishers Weekly).

Biggest literary influencers:

Classic writers such as Mary Stewart, Robert Ludlum, Helen MacInnes, Frederick Forsyth and so many others.

Last book read:

The Dry by Jane Harper (fantastic!)

The book that changed your life:

When I read a musty library copy of The Moonspinners by Mary Stewart as a kid, I knew I wanted to be a writer. Here was a book about an adventurous woman taking charge in a dangerous situation, with an intriguing wounded man, all in a compelling setting—a place I’d never been (still haven’t!) but could visualize through Stewart’s writing. One of my favorite writer quotes is from her: “Storyteller is an old and honorable title, and I’d like to lay claim to it.”

Your favorite literary character:

I don’t have one favorite. Not. Possible. That said, I always look forward to the next Elizabeth George novel and what’s up with Thomas Lynley and his world. I’ve read every book in the series. If he walked into my hilltop house right now, I swear I’d recognize him, he’s that real to me (and no doubt other Elizabeth George fans). Love Barbara Havers, too! Can’t wait for the next installment.

Currently working on:

I’m working on a standalone novel that’s been percolating in the back of my mind for months. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. On runs, standing in line at the grocery, driving to visit my ailing mother—the characters started to take shape and demand I get busy. So far, it’s great fun. We’ll see what happens.

Advice to new and aspiring authors:

Research, courses, marketing, thinking, conferences and such are all great, but there’s no substitute for actually writing.

“Only a writer as gifted as Carla Neggers could use so few words to convey so much action and emotional depth.” -Sandra Brown
