Every Last Breath

Start your summer off right with this first book in a new sexy romantic thriller series by former U.S. Air Force Intelligence Officer, Juno Rushdan. The heat wave plaguing D.C. isn’t all that’s hot about this book. Forget keeping you on the edge of your seat, Rushdan’s Every Last Breath (Sourcebooks Casablanca) will take you to the edge of a cliff and oh, what a fall.

Maddox Kincade has spent years honing her craft as a covert CIA operative. She’s tough, skilled and dedicated to a team she would die to protect. When her director assigns her to a case involving a lethal bioweapon that’s about to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, Maddox knows it’s not a job she can refuse. Not with so many lives at stake and not even if the asset she is tasked with recruiting to assist with the job turns out to be the ex-fiancé she thought was dead.

Cole Matthews has a new identity, a new home and a new job. What he doesn’t have is amnesia, even though there’s plenty he’d love to forget. Including the woman who betrayed him. When she walks back into his life, he can barely resist becoming her prisoner once again. Except Maddox isn’t the woman he knew, not even close, and Cole won’t tolerate any more secrets. With a killer on the loose and her safety at risk he has no choice but to step back into the fire, even if it means getting burned.

As the story unfolds and Cole gets swept up in the mission and in protecting Maddox, it becomes clear that he’s incapable of letting her go a second time. But when the only way out for them both is to dredge up the past, can they learn to accept what was, in favor of what could be? And with an assassin still at large, will they even get the chance?

The chemistry between Maddox and Cole sizzles from the start and their shared history, divulged in pieces throughout the story, only adds to the novel’s drama. I couldn’t put it down. The writing is crisp and tight with one-liners that really pack a punch. Maddox is girl power to the tenth degree and Cole is literally swoon-worthy as the tortured bad-boy with a heart that’s laser-focused on his badass lady love.

But that’s not all these characters are. Rushdan makes them complicated in an oh-so-satisfying way. Their conflict isn’t just born of the mission but in the battles waged with each other and within themselves. Even the villain, known as The Ghost, is complex. His motivation is detailed in the pages told from his point of view, which are expertly sprinkled throughout the main action to add to the suspense. Having the opportunity to get into the antagonist’s head pulled me right through the story to the very last page. But, no spoiler alerts here! You’ll have to read this one to find out how it ends.

One thing’s for sure – Every Last Breath is a rollercoaster, and I can guarantee, you won’t regret going along for the ride.
