BOOKS:

I’m Here (2018)

Biggest literary influencers:

I can never put down an Elin Hildebrand book— give me great recurring characters and a beach, and I’m hooked!

Last book read:

I just finished The Storyteller’s Secret by Sejal Badani. It was a beautifully written story, crossing times and places while bringing a family together. I was grabbed by the first page. I’m currently reading A Simple Favor by Darcey Bell for my next book club.

The book that changed your life:

Certainly this is an unfair question?! Needful Things by Stephen King caused me to read with extra lights on and my door open, looking over my shoulder.  I can never read another of his novels. Not because I don’t admire him, but because he is such a horrifying and brilliant storyteller. I’m actually afraid of the hardbacks on the shelf. Spiders. Shudder.

Your favorite literary character:

I fell in love with Jack in Emma Donoghue’s Room. It may have been the first time I was truly captured by a narrator who was so unlike myself, and this five-year old boy has stayed with me for years. I can still picture so many scenes and moments from the novel— it lives inside my head.

Currently working on:

I’m writing my second novel, and I’m really enjoying getting to know these new characters. I’ve set it at Christmas, which has been fun to write— so far everyone is alive and there have been no strange twists. It’s early days, though…

Words to live by:

Live your life with good intentions.

Advice to new and aspiring authors:

I wanted to be published by the time I was thirty. Then forty. I published my first novel the year I turned fifty, and it has been the best year of my life, for so many reasons. Adjust your timeline and don’t look back!

If there are kind words in a rejection you have received, believe them and move forward.

No one will find your story if it is sitting on your computer. Put it into to the world— that’s what you were meant to do!
