Gone With the Wind
A first edition, first printing hardcover copy of the iconic romance novel Gone With the Wind signed by Margaret Mitchell is being auctioned Nov. 3 in Los Angeles by renowned auction house GWS Auctions.
Margaret Mitchell only published one complete novel, but it was the book, earning her a Pulitzer Prize in 1937 and a National Book Award for 1936.
The first edition, first-printing was only 10,000 copies, and they had an incorrect release date of May 1936. The corrected second printing had 25,000 copies but both printings were actually released to the American public in June 1936. This copy offered bears the May 1936 release date and is signed by the author on the front free endpaper.
The book has a spectacular facsimile printed first issue dust jacket with “Macmillan Spring Novels” printed on the top back panel and the original publisher’s price of $3 on the inside flap.
The book is being auctioned as part of GWS’s The Legends: Iconic Hollywood and Music Memorabilia Auction. Other GWTW-related items being offered in this auction also include Clark Gable’s signed contract for “Gone With the Wind” between Selznick International and MGM W/MGM Accounting Documents, a 1930s studio-issued souvenir photo and a “Gone With the Wind” collection of cast-signed documents (Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh and Ann Rutherford).
