7th Grade Revolution by Liana Gardner
On Halloween, the entire 7th grade of Washington Academy Middle School is brought together for an assembly and told there has been a successful revolution. The students will now make all the decisions for the 7th grade and the only requirements is that they must stay within state and federal law. However, outside of those parameters, everything else is fair game. Immediately, leaders emerge, groups are formed and the students try to determine how best to manage their newfound power. A revolution is not the only exciting event to take place this Halloween, the students also discover a hidden cavern beneath their school where the loyalties of our Founding Fathers are questioned and the history books might not be giving us the whole story.
Inspired by true events, 7th Grade Revolution is a great read for middle school aged students as they will be engrossed by the storyline as well as identify with the characters. The story dances with the idea of a dystopian school by usurping the hierarchical nature of schooling with adults as authority figures and replaces that dynamic with a scenario of students leading themselves. It also takes a turn into historical fiction when the students discover a never before seen letter regarding George Washington and gain insight into the Revolutionary War. Liana Gardner provides a seamless blend of historical fiction, suspense, and adventure. It is Lord of the Flies meets the movie National Treasure. The novel takes place in Asheville, North Carolina and deals with a multitude of themes such as moving to a new school, stereotypes, teamwork, and friendship. If you have read and loved the book The Wave by Todd Strasser, you will also love 7th Grade Revolution, as it also gives you a new way of looking at a topic we all believe to know very well.
