Which is why we like to imagine the books our favorite fictional characters are currently obsessed with. Today, we’re exploring the world of DC Comics and The CW’s Arrow as we ponder what Felicity Smoak‘s bookshelf might look like these days.
Arrow’s Felicity Smoak is a brilliant hacker, an awkward conversationalist, and the (once-again) lady love of Oliver Queen. She’s also tough as nails, smarter than almost anyone on television, and capable of stopping bad guys with a single click of her mouse.
Our girl Felicity Smoak probably doesn’t have much time for reading – too busy saving the world and all that – but here are five books we imagine are gracing her fictional bookshelf:
Magpie Murders, Anthony Horowitz (Harper, June 6, 2017)
Felicity loves a good puzzle, and she’s often the member of Team Arrow who first figures out the intricate plots and plans of the evil villains. So she’s definitely reading Magpie Murders, a book that’s so smart and complicated it makes The DaVinci Code look like an easy reader. It’s also a book within a book, as editor Susan Ryeland reads through the manuscript of her bestselling, by-the-numbers crime author, Alan Conway. But this manuscript is different from the rest, and soon Susan becomes convinced that there’s another story under the surface about a real life murder. It’s up to both Susan and the reader to figure out what’s really going on in a complicated narrative that is clearly made for Felicity Smoak.
Arrow: A Generation of Vipers, Susan Griffith & Clay Griffith (Titan Books, March 28, 2017)
If there’s anything Felicity loves more than computers, it’s the people in her life. Therefore, she’d be first in line to buy the companion tie-in novels to Arrow and The Flash. Not only would she get to read up on her friends and the love of her life (#TeamOlicity), but she’d also have the voyeuristic fun of reading about herself in a book. A Generation of Vipers picks up where the last Flash book left off, with Team Arrow and Team Flash coming together to save the day. The Flash is going to need Oliver’s help in order to defeat new villain Count Wallenstein, which brings both groups to Markovia. Reading this will feel like you’re watching a crossover episode of the two shows, which means Felicity will feel right at home.
Beautiful Mistake, Vi Keeland (EverAfter Romance, July 17, 2017)
Felicity is no stranger to a good pair of abs – she is dating Oliver Queen after all. Nor is she afraid of a little ogling, what with her devotion to the salmon ladder. Or, more accurately, Oliver on the salmon ladder. But honestly, who can blame her?! Regardless, we know she’d like some romance on her bookshelf, especially a story about a sexy professor with a perfect body. Beautiful Mistake even starts in a Felicity-style way, with a plucky young woman who immediately puts her foot in her mouth. After telling off the wrong guy by mistake, she hopes she never sees him again, only to quickly realize that she’s his new TA. Now they’re working together, with lots of sexy tension. Remind you of anyone? Felicity is bound to adore this sexy new romance that’s plenty reminiscent of her own love story.
Secrets in Death, J.D. Robb (St. Martin’s Press, September 5, 2017)
Above all, Felicity is one kick-ass heroine in her own right. Which is exactly why she’d adore the In Death series, about detective Eve Dallas who solves futuristic crimes along with her husband, Roarke. Plus, future space gadgets! Felicity would totally approve. In the 45th(!!) book in the series, Eve is investigating the murder of a gossip columnist, along with all the juicy secrets the woman has collected over the years. Now it’s up to her to solve the murder and save the day, using both her wits and her abilities in the field – a feeling Felicity will instantly relate to.
Ghost in the Wires, Kevin Mitnick & William L. Simon (Little, Brown and Company, August 15, 2011)
This hacking memoir may have come out a few years ago, but there’s no way Felicity doesn’t have a beat-up copy gracing her bookshelf. If she was real, she’d probably give expert hacker, Kevin Mitnick, a run for his money. Which is exactly what Mitnick did when he started hacking the world’s biggest companies while constantly staying one step ahead of the Feds. The thrill and power of hacking led him on a crazy chase through the internet, as well as in the real world, where he hopped cities, changed names, and found solace in a life on the web. After Felicity’s less than above-board hacking experiences this past year, Mitnick’s tale is both exciting and cautionary – a perfect edition for her bookshelf.
