SEPTEMBER BOOK CLUB PICKS

Happy weekend, Book Lovers! This week of The Pulse has good news, great news and some rather troubling news … If it helps, there’s more good than bad news, which helps. We’re covering everything from a generous donation that could possibly be seen as a subtle act of rebellion (we see you, Nora Roberts, and we love it ) to disturbing book industry trends. We even cover Dr. Jane Goodall’s new book! Find out all about what is happening in the world of books in this week’s The Pulse.

STANDOUT READS BOOKTRIB’S DISCUSSING

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin: “A coming of age novel of three young people that mirrors the coming of age of the video game industry.”

Jon Land’s The Thrill List: “Find out what are some of the most exciting recently released thriller novels you need to read!”

NEWS FROM THE BOOK WORLD

Remember a few weeks back when we reported on how a Michigan library was being defunded because it stocked LGBTQ+ books? Well, it seems they will be able to keep its doors open for a bit longer, thanks in part to bestselling novelist Nora Roberts, who donated $50,000 to the library! Thank you, Nora Roberts!

In books-to-screen news, we have quite a few big star names cast in book adaptations. Deadline reported that Liam Neeson will star as Raymond Chandler’s famous detective Philip Marlowe in the film, Marlowe coming out later this year. Comedians Dan Aykroyd and Chevy Chase will, according to the Hollywood Reporter, star in a film adaptation of R.L. Stine’s Zombie Town. While Ewan McGregor is apparently going to lead the cast of a series adaptation of Amor Towles’ A Gentleman in Moscow. Seems like we’ll have some great viewing in the near future.

According to Publisher’s Weekly, Penguin Random House released reports showcasing how their revenues have risen but that their earnings have declined. This doesn’t seem like an isolated event, though. HarperCollins’ fiscal reports had also a limited earning gross. What’s more, it’s not just happening in the US. In Australia, independent online retailer Booktopia, also saw sales rise, but their earnings tumbled. This news follows after European countries reported a similar trend with book sales plummeting with 3% in Germany, nearly 6% in France, and 4.2% in Italy.
