Happy weekend, Book Lovers! Readers will be happy to know that we have a full line-up of overwhelmingly good book news this week. We have some exciting news for non-fiction fans, a lot of book-to-screen news and even an upcoming accompanying book for the new American Girl doll! Let’s change things up this week and start with the good news. Dozens of organizations will commemorate the centennial of historian Howard Zinn’s birth with public events, publications, radio programs, book giveaways and even a “Power of the People” ice cream flavor. There are many new and updated publications coming, which you can find out about here: www.HowardZinn.org.
Non-fiction lovers will be pleased to know that C-SPAN’s Book TV will be providing live, in-depth, uninterrupted coverage of the National Book Festival again from September 3, 2022, (9:30am ET-5:30pm ET)!
In book-to-screen news, Deadline has recently reported that Laura Taylor Namey’s A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow is headed to the big screen and will star Maia Reficco (Kally’s Mashup), Kate del Castillo (Maya and the Three) and Kit Connor (Heartstopper). Premiering on Netflix next month will be three movies based on Annie Barrows and Sophie Blackall’s popular Ivy + Bean children’s book series. Deadline also reported that Elin Hilderbrand’s The Hotel Nantucket is headed to the small screen!
Now, onto some less-than-stellar news … The Houston Chronicle reported that a woman in Katy, Texas, filed a criminal complaint over the award-winning graphic novel, Flamer by Mike Curato.
AWARDS AND ACCOLADES WORTHY OF NOTE
Congratulations to Bard College Professor of Comparative Literature Joseph Luzzi, who has been selected for a Public Scholars award in the amount of $60,000 by the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) in support of his book project, Brunelleschi’s Children: How a Renaissance Orphanage Saved 400,000 Lives and Reinvented Childhood.
The Dayton Daily reported that journalist and author Wil Haygood has been named the winner of this year’s Ambassador Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award.
MORE BOOKS THE MEDIA’S BUZZING ABOUT
George Saunders, author of the short story collection titled Liberation Days, have unveiled an all-star cast for his audiobook. The narrators include Tina Fey, Jack McBrayer, Michael McKean, Edi Patterson, Jenny Slate, Melora Hardin, and Saunders himself.
According to The Bookseller, Mantle has obtained the rights for Kate Morton’s “stunning” new novel, Homecoming, after a flurry of rights deals around the world.
Britt Bennett will be penning the accompanying book for a new American Girl doll named Claudie Wells, who is said to be a girl growing up in Manhattan at the height of the 1920s Harlem Renaissance.
