STANDOUT READS BOOKTRIB’S DISCUSSING

Siciliana by Carlo Treviso: “Filled with plenty of action and epic battles, readers will relish this tale and eagerly await a sequel.”

The Winning Playbook by Rob Welsh and Jonathan R. Scott: “Takes a complicated topic and makes it simple to understand — if not necessarily simple to execute.”

Undefined by Michelle Lee Graham: “Transformative no matter what your own personal circumstances. And it’s ultimately uplifting … which is something we can all use.”

NEWS FROM THE BOOK WORLD

We start off with an interesting, developing news story featuring quite a few authors, including J.K. Rowling. So, after Salman Rushdie’s attack last week, J.K. Rowling tweeted, condemning the assault. Then, she was threatened, which police are investigating. Afterwards, however, she came out criticizing Joanne Harris, author of Chocolat, who just so happens to be head of the Society of Authors for “consistently failing” female authors who disagree with her “personal position on gender identity ideology”. This is not the first time that the Society of Authors has been accused of this, though. Both Rachel Rooney and Gillian Philip had complained in the media in the past, according to Sky News. What’s more, it seems that the Twitter feud will continue, seeing as Joanne Harris recently liked a series of tweets mocking J.K. Rowling. So much drama!

In book-to-screen news, Variety reported that Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) will star in the AMC series adaptation of Adrienne Celt’s Invitation to a Bonfire. Deadline reported that HBO is developing a documentary film based on New York Times columnist Charles M. Blow’s The Devil You Know: A Black Power Manifesto. The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Viola Davis is the latest actor to join the star-studded cast of the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, based on Suzanne Collins’ novel.

Apple TV+ has announced the trailer for Sidney, a revealing documentary, produced by Oprah Winfrey and directed by Reginald Hudlin, that honors the legendary Sidney Poitier and his legacy as an iconic actor, filmmaker and activist at the center of Hollywood and the Civil Rights Movement. It is based on an Oprah Book Club pick, The Measure of a Man, that documented the life of Sidney Poitier. Check out the trailer:
