Howdy, book lovers! It’s a brand new week, and this week’s issue of The Pulse is jam-packed with news from across the globe! We start off in the USA, make our way all the way to Japan, take a detour to the UK and then stop on by in Africa. Yes, folks, we have it all, and then some. So, get ready to delve into all the best news coming from the book industry!

NEWS FROM THE BOOK WORLD

We’re starting off strong this week with the Library of Congress announcing the lineup for its annual National Book Festival. Authors Janelle Monáe, Nick Offerman, and Clint Smith are among those scheduled to appear.

BookTokkers will rejoice to hear that TikTok is launching a virtual book club, and Jane Austen’s Persuasion is its inaugural pick. Can we get a whoop-whoop?!

In books-to-screen news, Dune fans can gear up for a sequel to the hit 2021 movie based on Frank Herbert’s novel! Production has apparently started, and five new actors are joining the cast: Florence Pugh (Little Women), Léa Seydoux (Blue Is the Warmest Colour), Academy Award winner Christopher Walken (The Deer Hunter), Austin Butler (Elvis), and Souheila Yacoub (Climax). Variety reported that Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom is headed to the small screen. The television series will be written by Melanie Marnich (Big Love, The Big C, and The Affair). Deadline reported that Cheryl Della Pietra’s Gonzo Girl is headed to the big screen, with actor Patricia Arquette directing.

Some other fabulous news comes from The Poetry Foundation, which has awarded a $343,750 grant to the African Poetry Book Fund (APBF) for a research study of African poetry book distribution!

AWARDS AND ACCOLADES WORTHY OF NOTE

A round of applause goes out to Claire Keegan and Sally Hayden, who are the winners of this year’s Orwell Prizes, given annually to authors who “make political writing into an art.” We continue our celebration of writing excellence with the winners of the 2022 Purple Dragonfly Book Awards being announced by Story Monsters LLC. This year’s Grand Prize Winner is The Power of Kindness Through the Eyes of Children by Ruth Maille. In other exciting award news, Kenyan author Idza Luhumyo was announced as the 2022 winner of the Caine Prize this week at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The winners of Japan’s prestigious Akutagawa and Naoki literary prizes were revealed on Wednesday. Congratulations to Junko Takase, who’s short novel, Oishii Gohan ga Taberaremasuyoni (To become able to eat delicious food) won the Akutagawa Prize for up-and-coming authors, and Misumi Kubo, who’s short stories collection, Yoru ni Hoshi wo Hanatsu (Releasing stars into the night sky) won the Naoki Prize for popular fiction.

Bolu Babalola, author of Honey & Spice, is writing a sequel to her romance novel! According to Entertainment Weekly, Sun Under Skin is scheduled for publication in 2024.

Canadian poet Rupi Kaur will publish her fourth book this fall, titled Healing Through Words.

In news from the UK, John Murray has bought the rights to Mind Fuel, a book designed to help readers build mental resilience, from Bear Grylls and life coach Will Van Der Hart.
