Daisy’s Adventures in Love by Nikki Sitch

After a series of online dating mishaps and five years after the loss of her husband, Daisy thinks she’s finally found the one. But as she settles into her new relationship with Brad, she realizes that everything takes work — not just romance and friendship, but supporting Brad’s children along with her own.

Daisy’s Adventures in Love by Nikki Sitch is a lighthearted and romantic comedy, tinged with moments of gravity and depth. It picks up where Love, Lust & WTF left off, following Daisy’s rekindled romance with Brad. Daisy’s friends are still navigating the dating scene, while Daisy focuses on romance and the changes her teenagers are going through.

BUILDING A NEW FAMILY

width=At the heart of this story is the strength of Daisy’s relationship with Brad. They have lots of adventures — Daisy meets Brad’s two kids, he meets her twins, they go on vacations, they do family bowling, throw a birthday party, and Brad and Daisy have lots of steamy sex.

Meanwhile, Daisy’s friends are struggling with dating. They discuss conflicts in their dating lives like open relationships, cheating, jealousy and some unexpected (and, in hindsight, hilarious!) sexual encounters — but they’re starting to lose hope that there are any good men out there. Daisy seems to be one of the lucky ones. She has no doubts about Brad. Even when all of her friends’ issues make her second guess her relationship, Brad shows how faithful and in love he is.

THE TRUE MEANING OF MOTHERHOOD

What is most heartwarming about this novel is that Brad and Daisy are able to prioritize their children’s needs, while trusting that they will remain at each other’s sides. The strength of their relationship and their dedication to becoming a family is shown when Brad’s oldest child comes out as transgender and changes his name to Carson. Sitch gives us a glimpse into the perspective of a parent stopping at nothing to support his son. We see that having a queer or trans child can require a mindset adjustment. It is terrifying to learn how cruel the world can be towards boys like Carson, which we see examples of in the novel. But Daisy and Brad are confident that nothing is too big for the two of them to handle, together.

Readers will see the strength of Daisy’s motherhood and the ways that Brad makes a great father. Daisy’s Adventures in Love covers all of the things someone might expect to encounter when their child comes out as a trans boy: new pronouns, name changes, wearing a binder, gender dysphoria, starting testosterone and pursuing top surgery. There are so many obstacles that trans people face while trying to achieve things as basic as being called the correct name. Brad and Daisy are intimidated to learn so much new information, but they agree they would rather not be another obstacle in Carson’s life.

DIVERSITY AND ACCEPTANCE

Daisy’s Adventures in Love is for anybody who knows the ups and downs of online dating, and the relief of finally finding someone you want to spend forever with. It’s also perfect for parents of transgender or queer children, who are looking for a fun — and raunchy — romance they can relate to as they navigate their child’s coming out. This genuine story makes it easy to fall in love with this blended family. Now we await the next installment of Daisy’s adventures!
