Hello, book lovers! Things are heating up this week, quite literally for Margaret Atwood who took an actual flamethrower to a copy of her dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale. Of course, Atwood’s book isn’t the only one under fire, well, at least not in the metaphorical sense. As book bans continue, retailer Barnes & Noble faces legal action from Virginia legislators. There’s a lot to cover, so let’s dive in.
STANDOUT READS BOOKTRIB’S DISCUSSING
More Than You’ll Ever Know by Katie Gutierrez: “A stunning portrait of two complex women, each filled with guilt, hunger, restlessness, terror, elation; each with a great deal to gain — and to lose. How far will they go? As far as they have to. Filled with mystery, suspense, and searing psychological drama, it’ll have you looking at the people you have always held closest to you, and wondering … do I really know them?”
Daughters of the Occupation by Shelly Sanders: “One of the most authentic and profound works of historical fiction … about World War II and the Holocaust,” Daughters of the Occupation delivers “a powerful lesson and a compellingly uplifting story of a fictional family who managed to narrowly escape genocide in Latvia.”
6 Novels for Mental Health Awareness Month: Exploring anxiety, depression, OCD, bipolar disorder, PTSD and other mental health issues, these six stories highlight the courage and growth along life’s winding road.
8 Getaway Romances on Audio: “Whether you’re planning a summer road trip or a staycation, it’s time to load up your list with getaway audiobooks!”
NEWS FROM THE BOOK WORLD
Oprah Winfrey and Sally Rooney Named Among Time’s 100 Most Influential People: Former First Lady of the U.S. Michelle Obama writes that Winfrey “has always had that uncanny ability to open us up, to hear beyond our words, and to uncover a higher truth, to be vulnerable with us in a way that allows us to be vulnerable back.” Actor and author Lena Dunham writes of Rooney, “she won’t just be the hottest young novelist of the year — she will be a permanent fixture, not just as a hardback in the hands of appealing youth but as a critic in the collective conscience.” — Time
Margaret Atwood’s Response to Book Bannings Is Fireproof! In a video released by Penguin Random House, Atwood “uses a flamethrower on an ‘unburnable’ edition of her dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale … to bring attention to the rise of book banning and restrictions in schools across the U.S.” This fireproof edition “will be on exhibition at Sotheby’s New York from June 3 until the auction on June 7, with proceeds going to PEN America.” — People
Barnes & Noble Under Legal Pressure to Cease Sales of Banned Books: “A Virginia legislator is suing Barnes & Noble to block the book chain from selling two ‘obscene’ books to minors without parental consent … The books in question are Gender Queer, a memoir by Maia Kobabe; and A Court of Mist and Fury, a fantasy novel by Sarah J. Maas.” — CBS News
