To Hover Over Waters by Jesse Banner

“A reflective, unique and lyrical literary novel for young adults with nuanced characters, global adventures, and dreamlike storytelling that uses its intriguing premise as a backdrop to explore the far-reaching trauma of abandonment.” IndieReader Review

“Colorful characters and [an] elegant, dreamy writing style. Magical powers, hallucinogenic visions and a dash of romance pepper the deeply philosophical narrative. Great for fans of  Neal Shusterman’s Skinjacker Trilogy, Andrew Clements’s Things Not Seen.” BookLife Review, Publishers Weekly

Without warning, a five-year-old boy becomes invisible to his family and the world around him. Unseen. Unheard. Forgotten. He chases after his parents, but the only person who can see him is another child experiencing the same separation. Left to make a life of their choosing, they give themselves new names — Des and Mar.

Three more children across the world — Pab, Ren, and San — are removed as well. They are free to do as they please, go where they wish, and explore without limits. They have different ideas as to why this is happening and what to do next. But they all ask the same questions: Is it a gift or a curse? How many more will be removed? Is there a way to break the separation? Would it be safe to be seen again?

After they grow into teenagers and find one another, they discover answers and their first sense of belonging — a new family ready to find a home. However, peace is threatened by a little girl in danger as Des tries to help from across the separation.

“The characters were realistic, the pain genuine and the angst of growing up and experiencing young love was explored and dealt with extremely well. … This is a book for parents as well as young people. The issues faced by these three families are universal. … An excellent first novel from a talented author and one I can highly recommend.” —Grant Leishman, Readers’ Favorite

One summer in Blue Springs, Alabama, tragedy, love and unintended consequences will change everything for three families.

Chad Gibbons and his best friend, Gary Lee Dillanger, have worked their way through the ranks of competitive go-karting with the legendary Kilgore racing family. Monroe Kilgore and his wife Uma see their racing world very differently, and Uma is haunted by it. Chad is pursuing the opportunity of his lifetime to become a professional auto racer, but the fast and luxurious world of racing is not as it appears. Tragedy strikes, and Chad is left to find his own way. Elle Dillanger struggles with criminal charges against her son, Gary Lee, and the truth about his tragic accident unfolds as the detectives investigate.

More than a coming-of-age story, this book challenges society’s complacency with the exploitation of youth and questions adult and corporate responsibilities. The journeys faced by these three families are universal and resonate for any reader: overcoming grief, finding one’s path, and discovering love.
