Your biggest literary influences:

James Baldwin, Carter G. Woodson, William Still, W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass, Rudyard Kipling, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, August Wilson, Toni Morrison and Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Last books read:

Smoketown by Mark Whitaker and That Will Never Work by Marc Randolph.

The book that changed your life:

100 Amazing Facts About the Negro by J.A. Rogers. This book was seminal in my learning about my place in the world and the many contributions of persons of African descent to the world. This book and others it pointed me to lead me on a fulfilling journey of self-discovery and self-love. The book put me in touch with my humanity and provided that “something that was missing” from what I was taught in schools all the way through college.

Your favorite character:

Jack Johnson and Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges are two of my favorite characters.  Mr. Johnson was a powerful presence and champion who did not apologize for his greatness.  Saint-Georges is the hero I never knew.  He was the champion fencer in Europe in the late 1700s, a virtuoso on the violin and influencer of Mozart, and his legion of 1,000 African and mixed-raced swashbucklers was the inspiration behind The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo!

Currently working on:

Two novels and two films.

Words to live by:

Readers become leaders. God blesses all of us to turn our dreams and ideas into their tangible equivalents. To achieve our dreams we must have the faith, be willing to do the work, and expect the outcomes.

Advice for aspiring authors:

A professional author is simply an aspiring author that did not quit.
