The Shape of Night by Tess Gerritsen

What happens when you blend romance and the supernatural into a compelling psychological thriller? You get Tess Gerritsen’s most recent book, The Shape of Night (Ballantine). With gothic elements and a modern ghost story, Gerritsen’s newest is a unique twist on the traditional suspense novel that will hook romance and mystery readers alike.

Ava Collette is trying to create some distance from her life in Boston by renting a house named Brodie’s Watch in a small coastal town in Maine. While using the excuse that a change of scenery will help the food writer make some headway on her newest book, it is clear that Ava is punishing herself for something that has happened in her past. While her cat prowls the massive house for mice at night, Ava uses alcohol to tamp down her emotions and to get through the lonely evenings.

After only a few nights in her new home, Ava quickly senses that she is not as alone as she initially thought. She hears strange noises, smells the unmistakable odor of the ocean where she shouldn’t and catches glimpses of a tall, dark, and handsome sea captain. Ava quickly learns the history of Brodie’s Watch and comes to learn that this brooding stranger in her home is the ghost of the long-deceased Captain Jeremiah Brodie.

It would sound bizarre to anyone, so Ava keeps these nightly visits secret. She does her best to find out more about her new house guest, equal parts charming and menacing. It doesn’t help that Ava’s drinking has become a crutch which makes her interactions with Captain Brodie unreliable for both her and the reader.

As Ava digs deeper and deeper into her research of the house and Captain Brodie’s personal history, it becomes clear that Ava may be at risk of becoming the house’s next victim. Forced to confront her own personal trauma and guilt in order to see her relationship with Brodie more clearly, Ava must take back control of her life in order to save it.

Gerritsen’s The Shape of Night is a unique new thriller that will appeal to a wide audience of readers. With the perfect blend of gothic creepiness and modern mystery, this novel is a great choice for a chilly October night!

The Shape of Night will be available on October 1st.
