No Judgments  by Meg Cabot

New York Times bestselling author of over 80 books for adults, teens and tweens, Meg Cabot is used to passing the judgments of others with flying colors for her writing. Her latest book, No Judgments (William Morrow) follows the spunky pink-haired, big-hearted waitress Bree as she weathers external and internal storms–both consumingly large, but surmountable with the right support.

Bree’s dealt with a lot of changes out of her control lately. Her father passed away from cancer. She found out from a DNA test that she was conceived through an egg donation and her parents were never going to tell her. Her ex-boyfriend’s best friend assaulted her and no one seems to take her seriously about it. While she was never as passionate about finishing law school as her radio-famous mother Judge Justine was, Bree finds that the psychological distress she suffered from the assault was enough of a tipping point to drop out and seek refuge in a place that always held comfort, a tiny island in the Florida Keys named Little Bridge.

Taking a waitressing job at the Mermaid island café and painting landscapes of the beautiful sights tourists flock to in her free time is exactly the change of pace Bree needs to take a breath and cut the craziness from her life. The old Sabrina would never dye her hair pink or adopt an old cat with an expensive medical bill. However, the new Bree feels like the outer change fits her fresh inner one and it’s only right to take care of someone who needs her just as much as she needs him as a companion. Gary the cat and Bree become inseparable, a deciding factor when a Category Five hurricane approaches and all of the residents at Little Bridge are pressed to evacuate.

Bree doesn’t want to go home and chooses to ignore the calls from her mother and ex-boyfriend Caleb whenever possible. While she acknowledges that it won’t be safe to stay in her own home through the hurricane, wherever she’s going she needs to be able to take her beloved Gary. Bree can’t imagine leaving him behind and receives several offers from friends in her community to stay with them in their safer homes. One of the offers comes from her employer’s wife, Mrs. Hartwell. Her nephew Drew is committed to stay in Little Bridge with his band of dogs all collectively named Bob.

Though he has the reputation of a heartbreaker, Bree can’t help but let her feelings get swept up by Drew’s courage and soft spot for animals, both traits which manifest themselves when he defends an abused dog at his aunt’s hurricane party. When the bridge connecting the island falls apart after the hurricane, together Bree and Drew act quickly on their mutual love for animals and rescue as many abandoned pets as they can when owners call in on a no judgment policy. Undeniably, they also find mutual attraction between each other.

In acting confidently on a personal mission with her sexy and surprisingly understanding sidekick, Bree gains closure in more areas than one from her damaged past. No Judgments is a feel-good story to curl up with on a sunny day at a dog-friendly beach or snug at home in the midst of our own summer tempests.
