What's It About?

Imagine that you are told your name has been found on a list at a murder scene. You don’t know the person who has been murdered, but will anyone believe you?

In Below the Fold (Oceanview), the murder scene of a young, wealthy stockbroker, Grace Mancuso, groups five individuals that do not seem to be related in any way. One of the people on this list, Dora Gayle, is a homeless woman who was killed days before. Also, included on the list are Emily Lehrman, a former public defender turned attorney representing organized crime members; Bill Atwood, a former Congress member; Brendan Kaiser who owns Channel 10 news and Scott Manning, an NYPD homicide detective.

Clare Carlson has led a great career with many accomplishments – including being a Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist. She now works as a news director for the Channel 10 news, but she still has reporter in her blood. She tries her best to show her team that every murder matters and has a story–whether the person is wealthy or homeless. Clare knows that the murders of Dora Gayle and Grace Mancuso must be connected in some way because of the list, and she sets out on a mission with her team to find out how. Another motive for Clare pursuing this case is that fact that her boss Brendan Kaiser is also on the list found at the murder. Clare aims to figure out everything she can about all five people on the list and why they are on it together.

While searching, Clare struggles with the possibility of finding dirt on her boss Brendan Kaiser, putting her career in danger. She also struggles with the desire to start a personal relationship with Scott Manning, the NYPD detective on the list, even though he has a wife and a family.

As Clare accumulates information on all of the people on the list, she is also pursuing another case–the case of her missing daughter. First revealed in R.G. Belsky’s previous novel, Yesterday’s News, Clare gave birth to her daughter Lucy when she was a teenager and gave her up for adoption. Eleven years later, Lucy goes missing and Carlson works the case without telling anyone that she is the biological mother. Now, in Below The Fold, fifteen more years have passed without Lucy being found, and Clare has not given up hope of finding her.

R.G. Belsky’s career as a former newsman in New York City gives him expertise in capturing the authentic environment of a New York City newsroom. As a reader, you are able to put yourself into the shoes of Clare Carlson investigating the crimes and invest yourself in the outcome.
