Life is really a bunch of scrambled words—love, loss, joy, zest, quest (note to self: I possess the high-scoring j, z, and q tiles) and figuring out how they fit into our journey. In her page-turning love story Triple Love Score, Brandi Megan Granett introduces us to the smart and sexy Miranda, a complicated protagonist who is equally Old School and modern woman. In her late 20s, she teaches poetry by day, and by night she is secretly the social media sensation known as the “Blocked Poet”—whose visual poems about life, love, and special occasions are comprised of Scrabble tiles. And yes, Hallmark is jealous. In her heart, Miranda holds a burning candle for Scott, ‘The Boy Next Door,’ her childhood soulmate; while in her bed, she engages in a meaningless physical relationship with the hot-to-trot Ronan in what she terms “a thing”. The “thing” happens to be with her “old enough” grad student hailing from Ireland, who seems to have fallen in love with her rather quickly. In a fairy tale twist, Ronan, unlike Miranda, is looking to be saved.
Miranda, at first glance, is emotionally distant, blocked from the loss of her mother when she was only twelve. And yet, it is clear that she feels deeply for those she loves, particularly Scott, her forever crush, who disappeared after a fleeting kiss, and has returned six years later with secrets of his own. Miranda believes that their relationship is one-sided, but as the novel progresses, the reader learns that there are three sides to her story: hers/his/the truth. Brandi is extremely skilled at exploring the complexities of friendship, motherhood, and commitment. Not to mention that her sex scenes are deliciously written and the Scrabble poems, while not Emily Dickinson, are modern-day brilliant.
Triple Love Score is a fabulous romantic read—great for the holidays—a novel that is genuine and hopeful with a twist of whimsy. Without giving away the plot—let’s just say that LOVE, (a seven-point word) wins.
