Paul Strom has the perfect life: a glittering career as an advertising executive, a beautiful wife, two healthy boys, and a big house in a wealthy suburb. And he’s the perfect husband: breadwinner, protector, provider. That’s why he’s planned a romantic weekend for his wife, Mia, at their lake house, just the two of them. And he’s promised today will be the best day ever.
But as Paul and Mia drive out of the city and toward the countryside, a spike of tension begins to wedge itself between them and doubts start to arise. How much do they trust each other? And how perfect is their marriage, or any marriage, really?
I adored this book. Paul Strom is the most chilling, and most fun protagonist I’ve encountered since Joe Goldberg. Paul was charming, interesting, and propulsive — I had to keep reading to know where this was headed next.
The structure was perfect — like a ticking clock in the background. You knew you’d find out the resolution before the day was done, and each hour was told with a sufficient amount of flashback to understand the story of Paul and Mia’s “perfect” marriage. There is just enough tension to keep you buzzing, and the reader just a touch uncomfortable. You constantly have to ask yourself, what’s going to happen now? And sometimes, it would be nothing! The chapter would end. Each chapter had a built in twist that truly kept the reader in breathless suspense.
Best Day Ever is definitely the kind of book you read twice: once you know the secret, it’s never the same reading experience!
