Messud was born in Connecticut and grew up in the US, Canada, and Australia – only to return to the US as a teenager. One of her novels has won a PEN/Faulkner Award, a novel has been shortlisted for the 2006 Man Booker Prize, and more. Today, she is a novelist as well as a creative writing professor.
