In Royal, Texas, someone is targeting members of the Texas Cattleman’s Club threatening to reveal their secrets. Emily Knox, who lives on a cattle ranch near Royal, is trying to cope with her losses when she receives a shocking email with a picture of her estranged husband Tom, standing with a pretty woman and two smiling children beside him. Someone has written to Emily that she is “not woman enough to hold him,” and the message is signed, “Maverick.” She and Tom have already suffered a life-shattering disaster earlier when their four-year-old son died. Now she sees she has lost Tom to his secret family.
Emily is heartbroken because Tom is the love of her life. Tall, broad-shouldered with captivating hazel eyes, Tom is a decorated soldier, a rancher and was a wonderful father to their son. Because of Emily’s intense love for Tom, the mean message causes her great pain, as well as anger.
Later, when Emily confronts Tom, he is stunned. Ever since the fatal accident on a family ski vacation in Colorado, guilt has gnawed at him for failing to save the life of their four-year-old son, Ryan, and now the hurt he lives with deepens even further.
It has been five long, guilt-ridden years since then, and a chilly bitterness has settled in between Tom and Emily. His life improved only slightly last year when he moved out to the guesthouse on their ranch. His wife’s long, honey-brown hair, appealing figure and green eyes still set his pulse racing, but in many ways it has been better to be apart, because then he can let go of the burden of guilt. That;s why for three years after the accident, Tom had joined the U.S. Army Rangers. He can’t be with Emily without thinking about how he has failed her and how unhappy she has been with him. At the same time, Emily hasn’t been able to give Tom another child and she suffers from her own sense of failure.
After receiving the email about Tom’s secret family, Emily decides to move into town where she has a photography studio. She has inherited her uncle’s house, which will have to be remodeled. Her uncle raised her and the house is the only tie she will have to family now.
But when Emily confronts Tom over the email, she learns the truth about the photo. Trying to salvage their love, Tom offers to help Emily remodel her uncle’s house. In turn, Emily meets Tom’s “other family.” Meanwhile Emily and Tom agree to cooperate with the sheriff in Royal to try to learn the identity of the person sending all the hateful messages to Texas Cattleman’s Club members.”
While Emily and Tom struggle with each new problem, they realize love is still vital in their lives. The question they each face is, will their love will be enough to overcome their loss and find a new life together?
