Since Gutenberg’s printing press, the book world has been in constant flux. But never have we seen such a drastic change in platform, genre, subject matter, and style than we have these last 15 years. Instead of the paperback, you get the Kindle format. Or, instead of the tablet, you get the audio book. Millennials. We’re making everything go so fast. We want it now, all the time, every time. Now. Now. Now. So, how do books fit into this world when we all feel like we don’t have enough time to enjoy our coffee, let alone read a 300-page novel?
According to entrepreneur Peter Kozodoy, the publishing industry is in a great position to move with the times precisely because of millennials driving these trends. He says, “Learning is an enormous core tenet of the millennial generation,” he continues saying this is a great sign for the book world, with one defining caveat.
“IF it can provide the type of value that we have grown accustomed to on the internet. To that end, books should morph into becoming individual ecosystems – not just a book, but a book plus a video workshop series, plus a workbook, and perhaps even including a live event component to drive the overall experience.”
As a fellow millennial, I think he’s right. We’re all about the experience and stimulation, constantly asking how much we can get out of X, Y or Z? Books have always evolved with the times and once publishing houses and, more importantly, writers learn how to dip their toes into the marketing game of this brave new world, the possibilities could be endless. Perhaps the novelist will once again be at the center of popular culture.
When asked about the books that had an influence on him, Kozodoy provided three gems essential for the aspiring entrepreneur and, really, anyone who wants to succeed. Take note fellow scribes:
