Raphael Montes’ Perfect Days Leaves You with a Thriller-Sized Book Hangover

in Fiction by

Isn’t it the absolute worst when you finish a book and all you have left are a ton of questions? #bookhangover! Well, that’s exactly what happened when I finished Raphael Montes‘ Perfect Days (Penguin Press, February 2016)The crime writer from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, had me literally on the edge of my seat from the very beginning and then… I fell off the chair.

So what’s it about? Perfect Days, is the perfect thriller! Medical student, Teo, meets the girl of his dreams. But perfect-days-raphael-montes-coverthis is not your typical love story that comes to mind. Unfortunately, Teo and his newfound “girlfriend” are about to embark on a journey that they will certainly never forget… or will they?

It’s seriously, Gone Girl meets Dexter; Secluded cabins meets Brazilian waters. If you’re picturing what I’m writing, you can only imagine what comes next in Montes’ dark and twisted page-turner. I am a fan of all things mystery, preferably the darker the better (Not to worry, I’m the happiest girl you’ll ever meet!). But when I was done reading Gillian Flynn’s novels I felt like I would never find another author who could capture such darkness, that is until I read Perfect Days. Montes may be the same age as I am, but in his English-language debut he is paving the way for young crime authors around the world.

Pour yourself some Cachaça over ice, find a nice spot on the beach and relax as Montes’ perverse words pour off of the page, causing your hands to tremble and your legs to go weak.

As much as I fell in love with this book (I was honestly sitting there with my jaw on the floor — super attractive, I know!), I was also left CRAVING all of those unique items Montes weaved throughout the story. So without giving too much away, here’s a look inside the warped world of Teo, and the things I so wish I had after reading Perfect Days:

  • A security dog: preferably a Golden Retriever named Samnson
