Watercolor Paintings Grace Westport’s ‘the beautiful POND’

This contemplative sketch journal, equal parts poetry, personal narrative, history and watercolor wonder, the beautiful POND by artist and teacher Judith Orseck Katz (Two Birds Press) is a beautifully constructed story about nature and community. Focused on the Old Mill Pond and Compo Cove in Westport, Connecticut, the writings and illustrations constitute a journey through histories both personal and local about the significance the pond has held for the town and the people who live there. We were particularly charmed by the beautiful POND, as the book’s watercolor paintings perfectly capture the whimsical beauty of Westport where BookTrib’s home office is located.

The rich history of the pond since before the American Revolution is revealed, punctuated by dreamlike watercolor images and personal anecdotes of summers spent by the Cove. Katz and her sponsor, Robin Tauck, have dedicated the beautiful POND’s proceeds to SoundWaters, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching youth about environmental stewardship with a focus on the Long Island Sound, to ensure that the pond will be taken care of for generations to come.
