You can say you don’t like it, you can say that it’s weird, but you can’t ignore it. Netflix’s recent series Sense8 has become perhaps one of their more polarizing properties. There seem to be very few centrist opinions on the show, which employs both a huge cast of lead characters and winding narratives more finely woven than a million-dollar rug.
Personally, I loved the show, which is why I’m pulling my hair out in anticipation of the announcement regarding a second season. Show creator J. Michael Straczynski teased at San Diego Comic-Con this past week that we’d have an announcement within two weeks.
While we wait for that announcement and in anticipation of the show’s Q&A session tomorrow, here are my top eight reasons why you really should be watching Sense8.
1) Because the Characters Are Actually Interesting
2) Because This is the Best Couple on TV
3) Because, If You Don’t Watch, She Will Kill You
4) Because the Acting is Incredible
5) Because This Love Story Will Rip Your Heart Right Out
6) Because There’s Nothing Like It On TV
7) Because There’s Way More to the Story
8) Because Renewal is Coming Up and You Can Help
The Bone Clocks: A Novel by David Mitchell (Random House, 2014)
Sense8 masterminds The Wachowskis are no stranger to the work of David Mitchell. The pair were 2/3 of the team behind Mitchell’s 2012 book-to-movie adaptation of Cloud Atlas. Mitchell’s latest work is in keeping with the temporal and cultural exploratory trends set out in Cloud Atlas. In this novel, readers follow 15-year-old Holly Sykes as she abandons her family and falls into a world of psychic phenomenon and ethereal mysticism. A surprising array of characters are influenced by Holly’s actions, including a war reporter in Iraq, a fading fiction writer, and a wealthy youth on the verge of seizing a firm foot-hold in the upper-class. The Bone Clocks weaves together these narratives in hypnotic pathways that will feel very familiar to fans of Sense8 and with equally inspiring results. All in all, it’s a refreshing read to while the hours away while you wait for J. Michael Straczynski’s announcement.
