Fit Fuel: A Chef’s Guide to Eating Well, Getting Fit, and Living Your Best Life by Robert Irvine

Oh, Food Network, how you slay me. If you’re anything like me, Food Network has been your go-to resource for anytime-of-the-day television for years now. And a massive, British component of that success has been the muscular man-machine that is Chef Robert Irvine.

Irvine began his cooking career in the Royal Navy at the age of 15. Nearly 45 years later, he has become one of the most recognizable figures in the industry as the host of the insanely popular Food Network show, Restaurant Impossible. But cooking isn’t his only passion. He was also labeled one of the “25 Fittest Guys in America” by Men’s Fitness in 2007 and is a constant advocate for healthy living.

51xHrzZqiiLThat’s why foodies everywhere are chomping at the bit (pun definitely intended) for Irvine’s upcoming book, Fit Fuel: A Chef’s Guide to Eating Well, Getting Fit, and Living Your Best Life.

In terms of giving yourself a tall order, this book might as well be called, “I’m Robert Irvine: Here’s the Cure for Everything.” But, honestly, if anyone can deliver on this book’s tagline, this man is definitely the one to do it. His no-nonsense attitude has been at the backbone of the show’s success since its inception, so it should be no surprise that it runs down the spine of his new book as well (it’s raining puns).

But, Fit Fuel is not Restaurant Impossible, nor is it intended for those in the hospitality industry. This book is aimed at you and me, the everyday people who struggle with meeting their diet and exercise goals amidst a world of high stress and fast food. Irvine brings his “I’m harsh because I care” flair to the book in an effort to help you maximize your fitness and finally reach your own personal mountaintop.

He does this, with the aid of fitness writer Matt Tuthill, in three logical sections:

  • The first segment is largely a think-piece that examines the process of goal-setting and reaching your maximum potential.
  • The second area dives head-first into exercise by providing Irvine’s very own easy-to-follow plan complete with illustrations.
  • Finally, we get a taste of how the chef manages his own diet with simple recipes for daily meals along with step-by-step instructions and plenty of pictures.

While Irvine has done cookbooks before (two to be exact), this marks his first all-around fitness publication. And I think the medium fits him quite well. The thing about Chef Irvine is that you can easily boil his philosophies down into tiny soundbites and reflect on them long past your initial introduction. This isn’t because what he espouses is basic or easy – it’s because he’s smart enough to demystify complexity and deliver exactly what you need when you need it. He does it time after time on Restaurant Impossible. And, if we’re lucky, he might just be doing it for all of us in Fit Fuel when it releases on August 1, 2015.
