When it comes to the ultimate in fashion, the Hollywood award shows take a back seat to the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition opening night gala–there’s a good reason it’s called the “Oscars of Fashion.” The brainchild of Anna Wintour, this year’s theme was China: Through the Looking Glass. The world’s fashionistas turned out in jewel-drenched splendor to show off the latest couture. Some followed the theme, some went couture crazy and some played it safe. But we’ll leave the modest frocks to others. Here are the outfits that really turned our heads.
