Vampires in young adult novels have been “over” for a while now. It used to be impossible to enter a bookstore without seeing dozens of stories about young girls falling in love with those immortal bloodsuckers. And it wasn’t just vampires. There were werewolves, angels, ghosts, demons—for a few years, the paranormal world was a hot commodity in young adult fiction.

But then came the rise of The Hunger Games and the dystopian novel. Instead of sexy vampires, ruined societies and warrior-like heroines filled the shelves. Paranormal books floundered under the power of series like Divergent, infinite-seaDelirium, and Matched. While there were a few highlights, such as Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, the general consensus was that paranormal novels – where magical elements exist in our ‘normal’ world – were finished.

Now it seems that the tides are shifting again. While high fantasy novels like Sarah Maas’s Throne of Glass series are enjoying widespread popularity, paranormal novels are starting to sneak back onto bookshelves. The fall YA lineup is a diverse blend of fantasy, dystopian, realistic-fiction and yes, paranormal novels. Will they become as popular as they were during the Twilight years? We’ll have to wait and see. But in the meantime, here are three new paranormal reads to look out for this fall:

The Infinite Sea by Rick Yancey (September 16)

The anticipated follow up to last year’s The 5th Wave tells the story of a calculated alien invasion that comes in five horrific waves. Part paranormal, part sci-fi, and part apocalyptic, the novel deals with how people come together in sublime_cover_2the face of extreme destruction. Will the aliens succeed in demoralizing and killing off what remains of the human race? Pick up this action-packed sequel to find out.

Sublime by Christina Lauren (October 14)

Christina Lauren is really two authors – Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings – and their newest collaboration takes on paranormal worlds and forbidden loves. Lucy and Colin meet one chilly day and it’s basically love at first sight. There’s only one 15768409problem – Lucy is a ghost, and Colin is prepared to do almost anything to be with her, including dying (or coming very close). Romance, ghosts and murders? This is one paranormal book you won’t want to miss.

The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin (November 4)

Ever since The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, published in 2011, fans have been anxiously waiting to find out what will come of Mara. After an accident left several of her friends dead, Mara moved to a new town and tried to start over. But she soon realized that the threat might not be abandoned buildings or accidental deaths – it might be coming from inside herself. Together with her love Noah, she has to solve the mystery of what she is. Retribution is the third and final book in the series, and promises to resolve the cliffhanger left at the end of Book Two. Fans are praying for a happy ending for Noah and Mara, though this tweet from author Hodkin seems a little ominous:

What does it mean for Mara? I guess you’ll just have to read to find out! And make sure to pick up the other books on this list too. Only you – and your bookshelf – can help keep the paranormal genre alive.
