Lately it seems like dragons are everywhere. Whether you’re turning on the television, picking up a book, or heading to the movies, you’re almost guaranteed to see a fire-breathing, scale-wearing, high-flying creature. Not that we’re complaining. Dragons are a staple of the world of fantasy, way more badass than unicorns and certainly more interesting than fairies. We say bring on the dragons! And here are some of the best that have recently caught our eye:

How to Train Your Dragon 2

The first movie was a feel-good adventure about a boy named Hiccup and the dragon he befriends. The sequel, out in theaters now, promises to be even better. Hiccup and his friends have come of age, and with maturity come new responsibilities, dangers, and brewing conflicts between humans and dragons. Check out the trailer and I promise you’ll want to see this heartwarming tale:

The Firelight Series by Sophie Jordan

firelightseries

This young adult series tells the story of Jacinda, a descendent of dragons forced to hide among humans in order to survive. There she meets Will, a hunter and a boy who should be her enemy. Of course, she finds herself falling for him instead. But it’s not all romance – Jacinda is in danger of losing her powers even as she’s forced to confront her greatest enemy. If you like dragons, romance, and strong-willed heroines (and who doesn’t?), then this series is for you.

Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

Obviously we couldn’t make it through a dragon post without mentioning Game of Thrones and Daenerys Targaryen, the Mother of Dragons. Season 4 just ended, so now is the perfect time to binge-watch the HBO show, or finally read all those super-long books.

Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison

Dragon Bound

Dragons are a very prominent theme in paranormal romance novels, and Thea Harrison’s series, The Elder Races, are some of the best out there. Start with Dragon Bound, the story of shape-shifter Dragos falling in love with the half-human Pia. First he wants to kill her then he wants to bed her. A typical romance trope, made all the more sexy when you toss in some dragons.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

Hobbit9

Whether it’s the movies or the book, The Hobbit will never go out of style. Read the classic fantasy tale again, or rewatch The Desolation of Smaug as you wait for the final film, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, to come out in December.

Dragon Bookends

Dragon Bookends

We’ve showcased bookends by Knob Creek Metal Art before – and for good reason. They are awesome, always original, and pretty much dominating my Christmas-list this year. Love, love this dragon/knight combo. I can’t think of a better thing to prop my books up with.

Siege & Storm by Leigh Bardugo

Seige and Storm

The second book in Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy features an ice dragon. Yeah, that’s right. An. Ice. Dragon. That alone makes this young adult novel worth reading, not to mention the strong characters, the Russia-inspired fantasy world, and the beautiful prose. The third book, Ruin & Rising, came out June 17, so get to a book store ASAP!

Do I even have to explain why this is awesome?

It’s official: dragons are very hot right now. Literally, I suppose, as they like to breathe fire. But what do you think of the dragon craze? Here to stay or a passing phase? Let us know in the comments!
